According to the Greeks, the substance of our reality consists of 5 elements.

The first is Earth. All of solid matter, the physicality. Everything is made of something. And every something has impact, touch, and feel. These qualities establish the foundation for experience and relationship.

Water is the second of these elements. It is Flow and Movement, a pushing and a pulling. The process of taking one thing and becoming another. Fluidly, Life takes its course. Substance fills its vessel. Everything becomes.

The third in this elemental system is Fire. HEAT. Brilliance. It is a vibrant aspect of reality. Fire is danger and curiosity, illumination and ingenuity. When dealt with, with control,  this element is a necessary component for the growth of a civilization, providing light for study, combustion for cooking, and heat to stave off the cold bite of winter and literal bite of large predators. Something incredible can be found in the beautiful flickering of dancing flame and casting shadows. But in fire’s wildness, it is capable of destroying everything in its path, far faster than it ever took to build. And in this dynamic duality, fire’s capacity for both construction and chaos forces a respect and admiration from those who would dare to use it toward their purpose.

Air. Breath. Inspiration. The source of brevity. The space between. Air is potential itself and it fills you, so long as you are living. It makes life livable, it brings balance to the design of physical spaces, and it is easily forgotten. Even though it is always invisible, we feel just how refreshing it can be to have a gentle breeze graze our skin on a beautiful summer day, and almost everybody knows just how terrifying it can be to get caught outside in the middle of a storm with gusts that can almost knock you over. A life lesson, when it happens.

And that brings us to the element that has inspired the name for this music production and sound design studio: 

Aether. the fifth and final element, is everything beyond. The cause and the effect. It isn’t just what connects everything, it is everything – singularly. We have many systems of thought and religion that attempt to capture the meaning of this, but it is still yet far beyond our capacity to properly articulate through spoken and written word. Even though it is a transcendent quality – one that is so very difficult to describe – we still understand it quite well. We feel it in our sense of togetherness at festivals, family events, rock concerts, and church. You can touch it when you take a solo trek out to the woods and you find some incredible solitude and fresh air. What it is exactly..? God. Beauty. Presence. It is so many things, and it is everything.

Here at Aether Productions, we pursue this INSPIRATION. We believe it can be felt and understood, and this is the reason behind why we have chosen this name for our business. We believe that music communicates this underlying ethereal, almost spiritual quality of existence itself. Sound reverberates through each of these elements, altering them with intention and craft. 

As many of us have experienced, it is a profound experience both to listen and to create music. It feels like a miracle! And it is our honor to be in a position to share what we do with those who need highly intentional soundscapes, music production, and audio recording.
